Once you have the proper measurements in hand, here are 5 helpful tips for picking the right area rug size for every room:
1. Choose an area rug based on your room size. A 5’x8’ area
rug is typically a great choice for smaller bedrooms, home offices and under
the coffee table in living rooms. An area rug that is 8’x10’ or larger will
work wonderfully in your living room, great room, dining room and master
bedroom.
2. When it comes to coffee tables, choose an area rug that will fit underneath all four legs of the table. Area rugs should be about the same length and width of the furniture within the space. It’s best to either leave space between the furniture and area rug or place the front legs of the furniture on the rug with the furniture coasters under the back legs to match the height.
3. In your dining room, an area rug should extend beyond the chairs when they are pulled out. Before taking a measurement, make sure to pull out the chairs around the table, as you would to sit down. Now measure from the rear of the chair legs in length and width. Add 8” to this measurement to get an idea of the minimum size rug needed.
4. Balance your living room or great room by
leaving an equal amount of rug around the furniture grouping.
Keep in mind that an equal amount of exposed flooring around your rug can also
give balance to your room. Try to avoid an area rug that is so large it touches
the baseboard around the room. Use the rug to define the space and incorporate
your furniture to anchor the rug.
5. If you want to put an area rug underneath the bed in your bedroom, measure to allow for three feet on both sides of the bed. Your bed will cover most of the area rug when you are selecting a pattern. Multiple smaller area rugs can be used effectively in the bedroom by placing one at the foot of the bed and one or two on each side of the bed. In fact, using multiple area rugs can be more affordable while better complimenting your furnishings.
